Why do you want to be a tutor?
- I am interested in a great many things, above all of them language, music, and science. Despite its frustrations, I love the learning process and the feeling of discovery that comes from scientific inquiry. However, my primary drive is to help people, to provide some real, practical utility to the world. The appeal of tutoring is that it is a very direct way to provide solutions to people's problems.
Why should a student pick you?
- I have had enough experiences with bad tutors and teachers to know that just because a person is intelligent and extremely knowledgeable about a certain subject, this does not make them able to teach it. In fact, it is often the natural geniuses who are the worst teachers, because they have difficulty comprehending the questions and train of thought of those who are struggling. Although I have a very good grasp of my subjects, this came through considerable expenditure of effort, and I can vividly recall the sorts of questions and frustrations that I had as a student. So my specialty is in relating to other students' frustrations, in patience and a confident understanding of the roadblocks to the learning process in addition to knowledge of the subject matter.
Personal Statement:
- I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. I have a BA in Linguistics from Pomona College in California, with minors in Physics and Anthropology. I have worked as a researcher in the fields of musical theory and linguistics, in addition to tutoring students and teaching German and English. I have also worked as a professional piano player at a restaurant. My primary professional interest is in the practical application of the science of Linguistics, particularly in the fields of Language Education and Endangered Language Preservation.
