When our tutors were asked the following questions, this is how they responded:
- Hobbies:
- Music, cooking, golf.
Why do you want to be a tutor?
- I have tutored, worked as a Teaching Assistant, and taught as a professor at UT. These experiences were extremely rewarding. I would like to 'pay it forward' to help others get ahead and succeed. Last but not least I've always had a passion for learning in my life, in all sorts of subjects, and would like to share the excitement of discovery with others.
Why should a student pick you?
- I'm very patient and really understand how to help students who are 'stuck' on difficult subjects see the light. I also like to make the information relevant, fun and valuable. I like to help students learn not just the subject matter but learning 'tricks' and techniques they can apply in all sorts of situations later in life.
Personal Statement:
- I'm an informal guy. When I taught at UT I insisted students call me by my first name, not 'Doctor' or 'Professor'. New and difficult material is intimidating enough so I have always felt it is extremely important to be kind and down to earth with all students, regardless of their abilities and background.
Any Last Words?
- Years ago in parochial school a student sitting behind me asked to be excused for the bathroom. When he returned his fly was still unzipped. The nun angrily exclaimed: 'Zip that up! What were you born in, a barn?'
The student innocently replied 'Jesus was born in a barn'.
(I ducked just in time as the eraser flew toward him).
